No Strings Attached! Galax Event for Children of All Ages!

Chestnut Creek School of the Arts and The Conservatory of Dance & Theatre’s Creative Movement Class (Ages 3-4), co-sponsored by the Arts Council of the Twin Counties and the Galax Downtown Association have created a performance for children of all ages on Saturday, December 13, 11:00 am at the Rex Theater in Galax.

Katy Hickam, instructor, and her tiny little red-nosed reindeer in pink tights and leotards from the Conservatory’s Creative Movement class will briefly dance into your hearts, opening for the shadow puppetry performance of Aladdin’s Lamp, a Persian interpretation, by Iara Kendrick. She will be using seven different hand-made puppets and special screen.

Shadow puppetry, a popular art form for the past 1000 years in the eastern part of the world, is an ancient form of storytelling and entertainment, originally known as a shadow theatre, using opaque, leather puppets in front of an illuminated backdrop to create the illusion of moving images.

The show, which consists of puppets being moved behind a thin screen, usually tells a story or teaches some kind of lesson. The figures are usually moved behind a thin screen and are not entirely a show of shadows as it is more of a silhouette shadow, giving the figures some color. Unlike other types of puppets, only the effect the puppet creates is seen performing, and not the puppet itself. The performing shadow puppet is not just a single object of wood or cardboard, but a collection of things working together. However clever or beautiful the puppet shape, it's the puppet's combination with light and a screen that makes its magical effect.

“Traditionally, the light source for these shows is fire,” Kendrick said. “Obviously, we can’t use fire indoors for safety reasons, so I will be using a regular spotlight as my light source.”

Iara Kendrick studied this ancient art form in Indonesia, although it is popular in many cultures. She made a trip to the Shadow Puppet Museum in Jakarta and spoke with a man whose family had been practicing shadow puppetry for close to 500 years. Presently more than 20 countries are known to have shadow show troupes.

Admission is $2 and a non perishable food item for the food bank.

Support the Ballet!

The Conservatory of Dance & Theatre Guild is a group of volunteers who support the Conservatory in its efforts to bring the highest-quality dance productions to the Twin Counties. The Conservatory could not perform or operate without the dedication of our guild members.

Organized by parents and members of the community the CD&T Volunteer Guild brings together people from all walks of life who are interested in fostering the arts in our area and contributing to the enrichment of aspiring young dancers.

We have been fortunate to have the tireless support of our members since our first Nutcracker performance; but, we need new volunteers. Volunteers are needed for:

Backstage: Help with props, costumes, sets and cues

In front of the Theater: Your valuable people skills are needed during every performance as an usher or box office assistant.

CD&T Boutique and Concessions: Guild members staff the boutique and concessions for most performances.

Audience Development: Help distribute information about our performances to local businesses and the community.

Rumors

I have always seemed to be involved in gossip, rumors... and to say the least, I definitely didn't mess that part of Galax when I was away....

But recently it's been brought to my attention, that I have a maid... So I wanted to clarify, yes I have a maid, well actually two. And here they are at hard work.

It's funny how life works, isn't it? I seriously have been blessed to have such wonderful family to love and support me all my life. Our life years ago, before we moved back here, became really hard, and there were times when I had to stand in line for food at the Salvation Army to feed my children, but I wouldn't change ANYTHING I have been through, because it is made me the loving, caring, strong woman I am today. I might not have a college education, or even use correct grammar at times for that matter, but I could teach a lot of grown adults a few things, they still haven't learned.

P.S.

I WISH I had a maid, how nice would it be not to have to scrub the bathtub every other day because it's stopped up, and we have to wait till pay day to buy Drano,ha ha. Or not to listen to children fighting over who gets to help mop! Oh to the day I have maid!

Down at Grandpa Dixon's Museum

My Grandpa Dixon loved steam engines, etc. So much was his collection he had a museum of sorts. My sweet wonderful sister Jessica wanted to have some of her bridal portraits made with a few of them, so they repainted the old model ford truck, and I being a Mom who See's Christmas card photos!! Took some herself of her kiddos ( they also had some made with Jessica), of course I will not be sharing any of the beautiful bride in her dress, she would murder me in my sleep, but here are some of the kids ( and Bobby and I).....
