Earth Fare is one of my favorite place's to grocery shop. The customer service is AMAZING first off, and secondly they have "rules" for what they sale. They have a food philosophy...
The food we sell at Earth Fare is
as close to the ground as it gets, which means we have high standards for what goes on our shelves
They Call it the BOOT List...
artificial fats or artificial trans fats
Artificial fats are food additives created to replace the taste and texture of fat without the calories and cholesterol. Artificial trans fats are created when liquid oils are treated with hydrogen to remain solid at room temperature.
Artificial fats possess no nutritional value. They actually PREVENT nutrient absorption! Trans fats increase LDL cholesterol and lower HDL cholesterol. They cause heart disease and strokes, and contribute to diabetes.
90% of pre-packaged products in conventional grocery stores contain hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils.
NO High-Fructose Corn Syrup
High-Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) is a clear, colorless, highly processed liquid. HFCS is used as a sweetener in many processed foods because, thanks in part to large agricultural subsidies to the corn industry, it’s cheaper than sugar.
The corn industry tells you that HFCS is ok "in moderation." What they don’t tell you is that consuming HFCS “in moderation” is nearly impossible with foods from a normal grocery store. Check your labels and you’ll see that HFCS is everywhere – in foods including ketchup, bread, granola bars, flavored yogurt, and more.
Research has shown that unbonded fructose (like what is found in HFCS) may be bad for us. It has been linked to excess fat buildup, leptin resistance, ghrelin suppression, and increased cholesterol and triglyceride levels. While these research studies were not performed specifically with HFCS, a recent study was conducted by Princeton University using HFCS. This study suggests that HFCS may contribute to increased weight, increased abdominal fat, and increased triglyceride levels in the blood more rapidly than table sugar.
NO Artificial Colors
Artificial colors are food dyes usually made from coal tar, petroleum, and chemicals.
Many conventional products with fruit in the product name actually contain artificially colored sugar instead.
Artificial ingredients increase ADD and ADHD symptoms.
NO Artificial Flavors
Artificial flavors are chemical food additives used to change the taste or the smell of a food.
The companies producing top selling perfumes, soaps, and cleaning supplies are the same companies producing the artificial flavors that go in many conventional foods.
Artificial ingredients increase ADD and ADHD symptoms.
NO Artificial Preservatives
Artificial preservatives are chemical food additives used to lengthen shelf-life of food products.
Most artificial preservatives used today are made from petroleum products.
Artificial ingredients increase ADD and ADHD symptoms.
NO Artificial Sweeteners
Artificial sweeteners are chemical additives which are often used as a low or no-calorie sugar substitute.
Sucralose, an artificial sweetener found in Splenda, was discovered by accident in a lab while creating synthetic pesticide DDT.
Artificial ingredients increase ADD and ADHD symptoms.
NO Antibiotics or Synthetic Growth Hormones in our Fresh Meat or Dairy
Growth hormones are given to beef cattle in order to get them to market weight faster and to dairy cattle to increase their milk output. Antibiotics are overused to prevent and treat illness often caused by inhumane treatment, unnatural living environment, and overcrowding.
Livestock antibiotics may cause resistance to the antibiotics that help humans fight off infection. Synthetic growth hormones are linked with obesity and could cause an imbalance of natural human hormones.
Over 20 million pounds of antibiotics are given to healthy livestock each year – that’s more than 70% of all antibiotics used in the USA.
NO bleached or bromated flour
Bleaching flour involves using chlorine gas to artificially age and whiten flour, which gets it to the shelf faster. When chlorine gas is added to flour, it reacts with some of the proteins in the flour. This reaction produces a by-product called alloxan, which has been shown to correlate with diabetes in rats and mice. Bleaching flour also robs the flour of many nutrients, including healthy unsaturated fatty acids, vitamin E, calcium, phosphorous, iron, magnesium, and B vitamins.
Bromated flour is treated with potassium bromate, a maturing agent which allows for the development of gluten in dough to make the dough stronger. It also whitens the flour. Given time to age, flour will naturally whiten, and gluten levels will naturally improve.
