Our Valentine's Day Tradition: Family Dinner

Over the years, we have always had a family dinner on Valentine's Day. Some years we dress up, talk about manners, use our fancy china and go all out. Some years we do simple yet cute things like heart shaped food. Here is some of the things we have done over the years...

Cupid Comes to our House Every year..

When My children were little.. I read an idea in Family Fun Magazine.  Cupid comes and leaves little gifts on Valentine's Eve.. He also leaves kisses ;) Over the years my children have enjoyed this tradition, and I truly Believe they will carry it on to when they have children of there own.. Here is a little walk down memory lane.

Cute Homemade Valentine Idea~!

Items Needed:

4 inch clay pot $1.29
Glass jar $1.00
3 inch clay pot saucer $0.79
1 inch dowel cap $3.29 plus 40% off with 16
Red craft paint $0.59 (I made 12 with one bottle!)
White craft paint $0.59
Foam hearts $2.99 (150 pieces in a pack)
Clear small size basket gift bags $4.99 plus 40% off with 16
Curling ribbon
Sounds like a lot but some stuff you may already have on hand. You paint the pot and saucer red, glue the glass jar to the bottom of the pot, glue dowel on saucer and assemble. I filled mine with M&M’s, kisses and conversation hearts but you could use any candy. I also painted little white dots for some detail and glued on foam hearts but not necessary if you don’t want to.
As you can see they are adorable and if I divide up the cost it is about $4 per gift. Also, you can make these for any occasion. For example, you could change the base color and fill it with Happy Birthday mints from the Dollar Tree and put a foam cake in the middle or something. Use your imagination. Have fun!!!

Tasty Tuesday: M & M Crescent Rolls

Recipe for M&M Crescent Rolls:

• crescent roll dough – mine came from a can, but any roll dough will do.
• m&m chocolate candies
• baking pan
• frosting

Steps:
1. Lay out your triangle shaped dough. Place 8-9 m&m’s on the large area of the triangle. Press them in a bit as you place them, so they won’t fall around when you roll the dough.

2. Start with the large end of the triangle crescent dough and roll it up to the tip. Place each one on a baking sheet, and top with one m&m for show.

3. Bake these rolls according to your recipe’s directions (or from the can).
4. While these are baking, 12-13 minutes, mix up your frosting. My recipe for white frosting is: 1 cup powdered sugar, 1 T milk, 1/4 tsp vanilla. Whisk together.

5. Just out of the oven, and while the rolls are still warm (they are best warm), drizzle the tops of the rolls with frosting in a fun zig-zag look.

These are ready to eat, and will look great for Valentine’s Day with those pink m&m's. Try to eat them right away when they are still warm. If yours cool too soon, you can put it in the microwave for 5-10 seconds to warm back up.

Tasty Thursday: Valentine's Chex Mix

Ingredients

• 9 cups Rice Chex cereal
• 1 cup white chocolate chips
• 1/2 cup peanut butter (smooth)
• 4 TB (1/2 stick) butter or margarine
• 2/3 cup powdered sugar
• 1/2-1 cup M&Ms
• 1/4 cup pink and white sprinkles

Instructions

Melt the chocolate chips, butter, and peanut butter in a small microwavable bowl, stopping to stir every 30 seconds.

In the meantime, put the Chex mix in a large bowl. Pour the melted peanut butter mixture over this and stir gently to evenly coat.

Next, put 1/2 the cereal into a gallon ziploc bag and add the powdered sugar. Shake to coat.

Line a baking sheet with waxed paper or foil and pour the powdered-sugar-coated chex mix on it. Let it sit out to dry for about 1/2 hour.

Stir the M&Ms and sprinkles into the remaining chex mix in the bowl. Let this sit out to dry too.

Combine the chex mix together and enjoy.
