Countdown to a Frugal Halloween: Last Minute Costume Ideas

I love Halloween, but this weather.. makes me not looking to forward to it tomorrow! So here is a list of ideas for those of you who waited to the last minute and forgot to get a costume...

1. Owl

All you need are some old T-shirts, fabric glue, and a few hours to make this easy owl costume by Ellen Luckett Baker from alphamom.com.
Complete How-To: Owl Costume

2. Bat

Another creation of Ellen Luckett Baker for alphamom.com, these bat wings are simple to make using black felt and boning. The mask? It's as easy as printing out and pasting to a pair of sunglasses.

3. Rubik's Cube

Design mom and blogger Gabrielle Blair recreation of the retro toy requires just a box and some construction paper, a quirky kid can impress friends as this infamous puzzler from yesteryear.
Complete How-To: Rubik's Cube Costume

4. Superheroes

What child doesn't fantasize about flying through the air? Following Brooke Reynolds' lead, sweatpants or tights and a graphic felt cape become classic superhero paraphernalia.

5. Knight

With the pattern for a 1970s art smock, Merilee from Mer Mag sewed her little boys a pair of knight costumes with wonderful - and adorable- hand-drawn emblems worthy of King Arthur's court. Add sweats, boots, and the all-important plastic sword for an old-fashioned (and friendly!) sword fight.

Countdown To a Frugal Halloween: 4 days to go!

 ZOMBIE BOOGERS!!!

So I got to make these yesterday.. YUMMY!! I am addicted to BOOGERS ;)

"Zombie Boogers" Green Candy Coated Popcorn

Recipe Difficulty: Easy
Serves: 8-10
Time: 1 1/2 hours

16-20 cups of popped popcorn ( I used microwave popcorn)
1/2 cup butter
1 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup corn syrup
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon green food coloring
1 teaspoon baking soda

Preheat oven to 250 degrees F (95 degrees C).

Place your popcorn in two large shallow baking dishes.

In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt buter. Stir in sugar, corn syrup, and salt. Bring to boil while stirring consistently.  Boil without stirring for 4 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla and green food coloring until the mixture is evenly colored and combined. Stir in baking soda. Mixture will double. Pour the mixture over the popcorn and stir to combine and evenly coat.

Place the popcorn in the oven. Stir the popcorn every 15 minutes for 1 hour. Remove from the oven. Let cool for about 5 minutes and then break into pieces. Be careful popcorn will still be hot.

Depending on your location, you may need to adjust the recipe slightly to achieve the same serving size.

Enjoy!

Countdown to a Frugal Halloween: 5 days to GO!

Betty Crocker Bug Juice

Ingredients:

1/2 Cantaloupe melon
4 Bamboo skewers for bug garnish
Betty Crocker® Cloud White Cupcake Icing
Cake Mate® Monster Mix Decors
2 tablespoons Cake Mate® Green Apple Decors
2 cups apple cider
1/4 cup fresh lime juice
1-2 drops Betty Crocker® Green Gel Food Color
1 1/2 c seltzer

Instructions:

Use a melon baller to scoop 8-10 cantaloupe melon balls. Skewer them 2-3 at a time and insert the opposite end of the skewers back into the remaining cantaloupe to hold them steady. Decorate them with Betty Crocker Cupcake Icing and Cake Mate® Decors Monster Mix to resemble little bugs.

Place green apple sugar on small plate. Rim 4 - 8 oz glasses by running a small slice of lime around the rim the glasses just to moisten them, then dip them into the sugar.

Mix apple cider and lime juice in a 1 quart measuring cup. Add food coloring one drop at a time to reach desired color.

Fill the 4 rimme
ed glasses with ice. Divide the juice between them and top with seltzer. Garnish with Bug skewers.
